In line with government guidance our school is working towards a wider opening. Currently, we are open to key worker and vulnerable children only.

Wagtails

Welcome to the Year 1/2 Wagtails Page
Wagtails have been enjoying being scientists - they have been investigating different materials for Paddington's umbrella to see which ones are the most waterproof.
Marmalade sandwiches were on the menu in Wagtails today as the class pretended to be Paddington Bear, following Aunt Lucy’s instructions to make the perfect snack to put under your hat! Instruction writing to follow...
A huge thank you to the Bodmin Fire Station, especially Pete, Dave, Andy, Paul and Wayne for providing a fabulous learning experience for our Wagtails on Friday. The children loved exploring the emergency equipment and were quick to make comparisons with fire fighting methods of 1666. The Wagtails all showed respect, knowledge  and curiosity on the visit- well done!
The Wagtails were lucky to have been visited by a chef from Steins this week and made Christmas biscuits!
We are super proud of Archie in Wagtails class who has been sharing his new knowledge of the 1666 Great Fire of London with his family!
The Wagtails crafted a beautiful nativity scene, with the help of class parents, that was displayed in Padstow Church this Christmas!
Thank you to all parents for your continued support and interest in your child’s learning.

Reading
We would be grateful if all children could practise reading with an adult at home at least 3 times a week. Please record this reading within the reading record book according to your child's Accelerated Reader level!

Spellings
Spelling remains a whole school priority again this year and we are continuing with the weekly lists your child brings home to practise. They will all bring home the statutory Year 1/2 spellings, as well as some common exception words they need to become fluent with.

Your child will be bringing their new spellings home each Monday. Please help them to practise these, and remind your child to bring this book in to school every Monday.

What we will be covering this term
Please find a downloadable copy of our 'Curriculum Letter' in below - enclosed is an overview of all the exciting things that the Wagtails will be up to this term!

Wagtails Maths Challenge

This year we have introduced a new maths challenge for our Wagtail children. It has been designed to develop fluency in number and to encourage the use of mental strategies to solve arithmetic problems. There are 15 challenges for the children to work through in total over the two years. We will test the children approximately twice a half term but will always do an extra test  if you think your child is ready for a new challenge- just let us know.

You can see your child’s current challenge by looking in their maths challenge homework book. The challenge sheet has a few sample questions on it to show the way your child will be tested in school but they will usually need lots of practise to master a challenge. They will learn most successfully if they practise regularly for shorter periods, rather than trying everything in one go.

All children will work through the challenges at their own pace and may not complete them all. They may find some more difficult than others and may not be successful the first time. However, the mistakes they make are an important part of the learning process and children should be encouraged to persevere and their hard work will pay off!

As well as practising by writing out the number bonds or times tables that your child is working on, they may enjoy having a go at the ‘Hit the Button’ online.  This is free to use (although you can buy an app too) and can be used for any of the targets. Rhymes can also help as well as looking at a number grid and colouring in the multiples of a number.
